It
could be said that dgTreasures was a product of wartime.
In 1968 I went into the US Army. Because the only officer
schools available were infantry, and because I had
some smarts thanks to being an Army brat, I chose to
hedge my bets by committing an extra year to get into
a helicopter maintenance school as an enlisted man.
To make a long story short, I eventually found myself
in Vietnam
as
a flight
engineer on CH-47 Chinook helicopters. You've probably
seen these big dual rotor cargo and troop carrying
helicopters on news clips from Afghanistan and Iraq.
Part
of maintaining those monsters means being very familiar
with "safety" wiring. Nearly every nut and bolt that
could possibly come loose and fall off is held in place
with wire and one must become very adept at twisting,
forming and tightening this wire so it performs its
job correctly.
So......how
does this apply to dgTreasures? Well, about a year
ago, after being bored to death with corporate IT jobs,
I saw an ad for instructional videos for making handcrafted
jewelry from wire and gemstones. In a previous life,
I had been involved in retailing jewelry made by others
but this seemed to be an avenue to express my own creativity
and make something very unique. I ordered the videos
and proceeded to learn.
The
images you see on these pages are the result. So far
I have a fairly limited set of designs available but
that will be continually growing. I have received lots
of positive encouragement from friends and family and
have decided to make a go of it rather than return
to the boiler pressure atmosphere of corporate politics.
A
special thanks to all of my Veteran Brothers and their
families for their support of this endeavor. Without
y'all, I wouldn't be writing this.
